Information about the Research Unit Educational Science Teaching and Learning Research Lab

We supervise empirical theses that address various questions about research on teaching and learning. You will have the opportunity to work with data from the teacher and student questionnaire from the PISA 2018 study.

1. If you would like to write your Bachelor's/Master's thesis with a member of our Research Unit, a written request must be sent one semester in advance (submit your request by either 15 April or 15 October) to the primary supervisor you want to work with to ask about their availability. Please send the enquiry to studium-uf@uni-koblenz.de and include the following information:

  • Name and type of the desired thesis
  • Degree programme, current semester, and information about double enrolment, if applicable
  • Number of credit points achieved so far in the Bachelor's or Master's programme
  • Desired subject area

2. You will then be automatically admitted to our OLAT course, which includes the following comprehensive support programme:

  • A sample cover sheet for your Bachelor's/Master's thesis
  • Information about the structure and components of a thesis
  • Guidelines for scientific work
  • PISA 2018 scale manual
  • Tips on how to conduct a literature search
  • Helpful training on scientific work in the form of a learning path (development of an empirical research question and hypotheses, basics of statistical evaluation methods) -> this learning path is mandatory in the current semester!
  • Support materials for handling and analysing PISA data
  • Instruction sheet for preparing an research proposal exposé
  • Differentiated guidelines for citations and how to prepare the bibliography
  • Helpful tips for formatting your work
  • Information about the criteria that will be applied to assess your work

3. You will then prepare an exposé for your thesis (deadline is the end of the current semester). You will also have the opportunity to take part in our research colloquium during the current semester. Here, you will gain insights into the research of other students and have the opportunity to ask questions and exchange scientific ideas. Participation is recommended. If you are interested, please register for the event via KLIPS.

4. After submitting the exposé, you will have a counselling interview with the supervising primary reviewer and a decision about supervision will be made.

5. After registering your thesis with the University Examination Office (online), you will begin writing your thesis in the following semester. If desired, you will receive written feedback twice on the interim status of your thesis with respect to the following sections: 1) Introduction and Theory sections and 2) Method and Results sections

6. In addition, participation in the Research Unit’s research colloquiumwill become compulsory (7 dates). You will present the current status of your work at the colloquium once. You will receive help conceptualising your presentation as well as feedback on your specific questions.
