Lorena Kröner, a doctoral student in the Bioorganic Chemistry working group at the Department of Mathematics / Natural Sciences at the University of Koblenz, has been awarded one of the coveted ‘Add-on Fellowships for Interdisciplinary Life Science’ by the Joachim Herz Foundation. She will receives 12,500 euros funding over the next two years. Kröner is the only one of this year's fellows from Rhineland-Palatinate.

After successfully completing her teaching degree in chemistry and mathematics, Kröner started working as a research assistant in the Chemistry Department at the University of Koblenz since August 2023 and is a PhD student in bioorganic chemistry under the supervision of Junior Professor Dr. Marie-T. Hopp. In her doctoral thesis she is focussing on the biomedical potential of components from skin secretions of salamanders and newts. Her focus is on the analysis and synthesis of derived peptides and their testing in physiologically relevant systems. In addition to bioorganic, bioanalytical and biochemical methods, she also uses bioinformatics and clinical chemistry techniques. The fellowship will enable her to acquire a number of bioinformatics tools as well as to attend and exchange scientific ideas at conferences and meetings with other fellows. In addition, her activities in the field of science communication and the promotion of young scientists as part of the Ada Lovelace project has been recognized and will be supported.

The ‘Add-on Fellowships for Interdisciplinary Life Science’ are awarded annually in a two-stage process by the Joachim Herz Foundation to doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers who dedicate their research to interdisciplinary issues at the interface between the life sciences and related disciplines.
