The Excellence Award recognizes Hopp's research work in the field of coagulation disorders in certain blood diseases, which she has shed light on by characterizing the interaction of the blood component heme with coagulation proteins using bioorganic, biochemical and bioanalytical techniques. In recent studies, this was also extended to another protein, coagulation factor VIII, with which hemophilia A patients are also substituted due to a deficiency. The prize money associated with the award is intended to support future investigations into the functional effect of heme towards this protein in order to characterize the consequences of FVIII injections in hemophilia A patients at a molecular level and to be able to optimize treatments for these patients accordingly.
The annual Günter Landbeck Excellence Award is named by one of the pioneers of German hemophilia research, Prof. Dr. Günter Landbeck (1925 to 1992), and is endowed with 25,000 euros project funding. The award recognizes excellent research and new perspectives for the understanding and treatment of coagulation disorders, in particular hemophilia.
In addition to the “Experimental Work” category, the prize for “Clinical Studies” was awarded to Prof. Dr. Cihan Ay, Professor of Haematology at the University of Vienna.
