Are you passionate about creating a welcoming and inclusive community at our university? Do you enjoy supporting others and making a positive impact? Then look no further! We invite you to join our International Mentoring Programme and become a mentor and friend to our new international students.

What is the International Mentoring Programme?

The International Mentoring Programme is an initiative designed to help international students make a smooth transition to life at our university. As a mentor, you will play an important role in helping new students adapt to their new environment, make connections and feel at home in our academic community.

Why Volunteer as a Mentor?

1. Give Back: Becoming a mentor is a great way to give back to the University of Koblenz community. By sharing your experience and knowledge, you can make a real difference to the lives of our new international students and contribute significantly to their academic and personal development.

2. Expand Your Network: The International Mentoring Programme offers you the opportunity to expand your social network. By interacting with other mentors and mentees, you can meet people from diverse cultures and backgrounds and build valuable friendships for life.

3. Develop valuable Skills: As a mentor, you can enhance your leadership, coaching, and communication skills (in both German and English). These skills will prove invaluable in your future academic and professional development.

4. Engage in Cultural Exchange: The International Mentoring Programme promotes intercultural encounters and an inclusive community. By interacting with students from different countries and cultures, you broaden your horizon and gain a valuable global perspective.

5. Receive Credits and/or a Certificate of Appreciation: We greatly appreciate the work of our mentors. Their commitment is recognized with a certificate of participation and celebrated at the exclusive closing party for mentors – a special event for all mentors. Recognition in the form of ECTS credits is currently being developed.

What Will You Do as a Mentor?

1. Orientation Support: Help new students navigate their first few weeks on campus by providing information about university services, facilities, and campus life.

2. Academic Guidance: Offer advice on course selection, study strategies, and resources to help newcomers succeed academically.

3. Social Integration: Organize and participate in social activities such as group outings, game nights, and cultural events, to foster connections between newcomers and create a sense of belonging.

4. Emotional Support: Be a friendly ear and a source of encouragement for new students, helping them cope with the challenges of student life and offering guidance when needed.

How Can You Get Involved?

Joining the International Mentoring Programme is easy! Follow these steps:

1. Register: Register online here. We'll collect some basic information to help us match you with a suitable buddy.

2. Prepare: Attend a comprehensive training session where you will learn essential skills for being an effective buddy, including active listening, intercultural communication, and mentoring techniques.

3. Match and Connect: Once you've completed the training, we'll carefully match you with an incoming student based on shared interests, academic programmes, and other relevant factors, such as language skills. We'll facilitate the introduction and provide ongoing support throughout the programme.

4. Engage and Thrive: Make the most of your buddy experience by actively engaging with your assigned newcomer. Attend regular meetings, organize activities, and be a reliable source of support and guidance.

5. Celebrate Success: At the end of the programme, we'll celebrate our mentors' accomplishments and their positive impact on the new students' lives with a recognition ceremony and special awards.
