Exchange Program

The purpose of this program is to promote and expand international understanding, development, and friendship by stimulating and supporting educational, professional, and intercultural activities and projects among students and faculty of Winona State University and the University of Koblenz, and the respective communities that support these institutions.

Student Exchange (One-to-One Exchange)

Number of Exchange Students: Each year both universities may send up to two (2) full time undergraduate and/or graduate students. Standard length of stay will be one semester or a full academic year. Students may choose to attend the host institution as a visiting (non-exchange) student.

1. Tuition and Other Fees: The program is based on the principle of a direct one-to-one exchange of students, each of whom will take place of his or her partner at the exchange university. Each student participating in a one-to-one exchange shall register and pay tuition and other required fees at his or her home institution. Each student is responsible for any and all costs associated with accommodation and board (including vacation period), international travel, travel in the host country, medical insurance, subsistence costs, travel arrangements and visa.

2. Selection and Admittance:  The home institution will screen student applications and recommend students to the host institution for invitation. Furthermore, the home institution is responsible for nominating their students for the exchange program. Participating students are subject to the admission regulations, including language proficiency, class performance standards, and other policies of the host institutions. Students are expected to meet the minimal academic "good standing" requirements of the host institution.

3. Courses and Credits:  While at the host institution, students will take courses similar to those required for their home institution's program. The individual Student Plan of Study proposed by the student must be approved by his or her academic advisor at the home institution and by the host institution. To participate in academic courses conducted in English, students must meet the Winona State University Language entry requirements (see https://www.winona.edu/admissions/apply/international/). Academic credit earned at the host university may be accepted by the student's home institution. At the end of the academic year, each institution will provide the other with a final official transcript of the grades obtained by each exchange student.

Visiting Students (Non-Exchange)

1. Number of Students:  Either institution may accept as many visiting (non-exchange) students as desired,
following the same guidelines described above.
2. Tuition and Other Fees: Students may choose to attend the host institution as a visiting (non-exchange)
student. In this case students shall pay regular tuition and fees directly to the host institution. Each students
shall be responsible for arranging the necessary visa or travel authorization and shall also be responsible for
any and all costs associated with accommodation and board (including vacation period), international and
national travel, books, equipment, health insurance, etc.
3. Selection and Admittance: Participating students are subject to the admission regulations, including language
proficiency, class performance standards, and other policies of the host institution. Students are expected to
meet the minimal academic "good standing" requirements of the host institution.
4. Language Requirements: To participate in faculty courses conducted in English, students of the University of
Koblenz must meet the Winona State University Language entry requirements. Visiting students with TOEFL-
IPT scores between 460 and 499 can attend the English Language Center in their first semester and if they
successfully complete the ELC courses they may take regular courses in the second semester. Required

5. Additional Info: Visiting (non-exchange) students are eligible for participation in the WSU Cross Cultural
Outreach Program. The program will also provide services such as orientation, residence life program,
support services, and co-curricular activities.

Application Deadlines and Procedures

Having enough time to prepare your stay abroad is key to a successful application. Therefore, please make sure that you plan your semester abroad at Winona State University way in advance. We strongly recommend that you start planning and making all arrangements at least 1 year in advance. We are happy to see early applications.
